see the called, the ones
who have chosen
the lines on their faces
the weariness in their eyes
the sense that each word
weighs more
that each expression
is deliberate
their countenance calculated
footfalls vigilant
taking resolute breaths
but it is not only this
if you can hold their gaze
(for they aim it well)
you will see light
if you chance on a
moment felicitous
you can watch them dance
joy is their birthright
